Inventor of the internal-frame backpack. An avid climber and backpacker, Lowe became frustrated with the packs available in the 1960s. Classic framed models positioned weight high over the shoulders, making it difficult to balance during technical scrambles, while frameless options were too small for lengthy backcountry treks.
