Sponsors use the Olympics to showcase their newest, flashiest gear. Recall Speedo’s seal-like LZR Racer swimsuits in 2008, developed with NASA, or sprinter Michael Johnson’s golden Nike cleats in 1996.

For Rio, the Portland-based shoe maker pulled out all the stops, with a line of ultralight, ultra-expensive sunglasses. The most flamboyant model by far is the Wing, a $1,200 marvel of pure optical opulence and tech. Thanks to a durable no-slip strap, these limited-edition shades wrap completely around your head, so you’ll never have to worry about slippage. No wonder the Wing was the weapon of choice for long-jump silver medalist Brittney Reese.

The secure fit is only part of the tech equation. Nike's Speed Tint UV protection was designed specifically to mitigate the harsh glare of a track. And since the fancy optics and nylon frame were designed with the help of 3-D prototyping to fit together as one seamless piece, there’s nothing on these aero frames to snag even a breath of wind.

The end result? The most minimal, form fitting, high-performance running sunglasses on the planet. Strap these babies on for a jog and you’ll instantly forget you’re even wearing shades, until your bank statement reminds you.
