Vintage aloha style gets technical.

Patagonia Pataloha ($119)

The Pataloha performs well with soft organic cotton, a comfortable athletic fit, and buttons made from coconut. (Hey, they’re cute!) The bright patterns are just short of outlandish.

California Cowboy High Water Tropic ($135)

The High Water is the hunting vest of Hawaiian wear, with a specialized pocket to stash your beer and a water-resistant slot for your phone. Our favorite part: the bottle opener tucked discreetly into the hem.

Reyn Spooner Ino Kai ($108)

Honolulu-based Reyn Spooner makes a number of vintage-inspired aloha-print shirts, but this limited-edition one caught our eye for its homage to old-school Hawaiian voyagers. Even better: the company donates a portion of the proceeds to the Polynesian Voyaging Society.

FlyLow Wild Child ($70)

Consider this a Northern California take on classic island style. Instead of the usual hibiscus flowers, towering evergreens dominate the washed-poplin pattern. The retro wood buttons are on-theme, and the slim cut makes the Wild Child appropriate for formal events. (If your name happens to be Jeff Spicoli. Wooly bully!)

Reef Isle SS ($60)

An athletic cut and slim collar give the Isle a contemporary look, while the prewashed cotton-poly blend and reverse print lend a casual, worn-in feel. Kudos to Reef for making the shirt we wanted to wear around the house all season long, for everything from yard work to beer swilling to barbecuing with friends.

Mountain Khakis Chee Pono ($65)

Wyoming cowboy meets surf bum in the Chee Pono, with its wildflower pattern and relaxed fit. The shirt is 75 percent cotton, so it’s ideal for sultry days hanging out at the beach or shuffling around town, and the faux-tortoise buttons add a touch of forest flair.
