The practice of using a small wearable transmitter to track race participants’ times at regular checkpoints along a course. Chip timing has allowed race organizers to admit far more competitors to events, since it eliminates the need to track racers via a stopwatch or video feed. It also has the added benefit of cracking down on cheaters.
