Surfing champion Kelly Slater announced his new clothing brand, Outerknown, on Instagram earlier this week. The brand will launch in fall 2015.
Outerknown will be part of Kering, a large apparel corporation that owns surf brands Volcom and Electric, as well as Puma and fashion houses like Gucci and Stella McCartney. Slater had been affiliated with Quiksilver, his primary sponsor, for the past 23 years.
The design team at Outerknown will be headed up by John Moore, recently named one of GQ’s best new menswear designers in America for his surf-inspired lifestyle line at M.Nii. Slater and Moore collaborated on Quiksilver’s now-shuttered VSTR brand. According to Women’s Wear Daily, Slater said the brand would explore the relationship between style, sustainability, and travel.
