Escape the Hustle of Seattle and Explore Puget Sound

Seattle has a lot to offer city folk—a thriving job market, world-class culture, and all the pour-over coffee you can drink. But for those who need frequent and fast escapes from the metropolis, the shores and woods of Puget Sound's islands are only a boat ride away.

Washington State Ferries runs 13 routes in Puget Sound, the San Juan Islands, and British Columbia, including two that leave right from downtown Seattle. Here, filmmaker-photographer Brittany Delph and artist manager Himi Martin are bound for Bainbridge Island’s low-key beaches and hiking.

On Brittany: High Coast Knit sweater by Fjällräven ($90); Wrap pants by Akari Tachibana ($220)

Follow the lead of elite ultimate Frisbee player Hana Kawai and pick up a good read at a downtown bookstore before heading aboard. But don’t get too engrossed—the ferry crosses the water in 35 minutes. That makes it easy for professional treehouse builders Charlie and Henry Nelson, whose family business is featured on the Animal Planet series Treehouse Masters, to leave the city lights in the distance.

On Hana: Forti dress by Gravel and Gold ($225)

Hike Bainbridge’s 240-acre Grand Forest Park, which offers eight miles of trail. But why stop there? Take the bridge to the Olympic Peninsula and in 90 minutes you’re at Port Angeles, the main entry to Olympic National Park and its 922,650 acres of wild old-growth forests and glacial peaks.

On Himi: Souk pants by Seeker ($219)
