During World War II, allied fighter pilots carried maps printed on silk instead of paper: silk was tough, weatherproof, and easy to carry. Now modern adventurers can reap the same rewards, thanks to Burnt Point Lodge, which offer silk maps ($65) of any place on the globe. You can choose from road, general topo, or USGS topo formats. In a pinch, the maps can also be used as a sling, head covering, or tourniquet.
